Rocky IV
I read today that James Cameron’s Avatar picture has cost an estimated $380 million to date to make and market. According to The Washington Post, Avatar is “a tale of corporate greed when the seemingly primitive inhabitants of a distant moon are besieged by a private army seeking rare minerals.” Translation, Avatar is a movie that doesn’t interest me in the slightest way. If it was playing for free in my living room, I think I’d find a way to hang out in the bedroom for a few hours until it was over. That said, I wish it well, but I long for the days of real classics like Rocky IV, which is conveniently airing on Encore at the moment. A true Christmas classic (you’ll recall that Rocky floored Drago on Christmas Day in Russia) filled with epic montages, I can only guess that Rocky IV was made for rubles on the dollar compared to Avatar. Perhaps I’m just a ‘no frills’ individual, but I find it perplexing that somebody spent $380 million to make a movie that bores me, while I’m up watching Rocky IV for the two hundredth time.
